Constructing Connotative Meaning by Bridging the Impossible: Peirce, Barthes, and the εἰκών (2026)

This article proposes an original semiological framework nesting Peirce's trichotomy within Barthes' second-order connotation. It identifies three connotative types — conventional (symbol), existential (index), and morphological (icon) — and introduces the concept of compound connotation, with application to the εἰκών in Thai Buddhist art.

Beauty, the Beholder, and the Buddhist Artefact: Aesthetic Experience, Psychology of Art, and the Ontology of Beauty (2026)

What makes a Buddha image beautiful — and what does that beauty do to the beholder?

This article approaches beauty not as a property of objects nor a projection of the mind, but as something constituted in the encounter between the two. Drawing on the psychology of art — from Arnheim's perceptual forces and Gombrich's beholder's share to Vygotsky's social mediation and the processing fluency account of Reber, Schwarz and Winkielman — it traces the mechanisms by which the Buddhist artefact claims attention, holds it, and uses it. Worringer's opposition between empathy and abstraction provides the governing framework: canonical Buddhist sculpture recruits the beholder's empathic response in order, ultimately, to transform it — moving the encounter from worldly to transcendental beauty, from clinging to release. The artefact is a threshold object. Its beauty is its instrument.
